Closed Head Injury

What is a closed head injury?

Any trauma to the brain resulting from a sudden force or torque applied to the head.

What are common causes of closed head injuries?

  • Automobile, truck, and motorcycle accidents
  • Violent assaults
  • Falls
  • Sports injuries
  • Accidents at work

The traumatic injury usually occurs in two parts: coup and contrecoup

The primary impact or coup occurs near the location of the blow itself. For instance, if you fell backwards and hit your head against a cement sidewalk, the primary impact would be the place at which your head met the pavement.

The shockwave from the primary impact ripples through the brain, causing secondary damage, also known as the contrecoup. This results in damage to the opposite side of the brain, as the initial force "splashes" the brain against the back of the skull.
